It's A New Day

Miles and Evan began school a few weeks ago and I could not be more proud. Evan is in an Early Childhood program and Miles is in Kindergarten (KG), man I feel old! It is Miles that I would like to focus on this blog post.

With entering KG, Miles is now on the road to compulsory education for the next 12-13 years. On his first day of school, I couldn’t help but think of my own 33 years ago. My mom tells me that I was always a gregarious and inquisitive boy who could chat up anyone. On my first day of school, my mother walked me to the bus stop and I took the bus to my afternoon KG class. When it was time for me to return home, my mom lost track of time because she was doing something with my younger sister who was 2 yrs. old at the time. Before my mom knew it, she realized that it was time to pick me up from the bus stop and to her horror, she was running late. She eventually went to race out of our townhouse to meet me, but when she opened the door, there I was, already home. My mom said, I looked at her in her frantic state and calmly and inquisitively asked, “Mom, where are you going?” My mom realized at that early age that I was pretty independent and she knew that she didn’t need to walk me to bus stop again and I don’t think she ever did.

When I look at Miles, I see a lot of myself. His big physical stature for his age (I was the biggest child in my KG class) his gregarious nature (he is energized by people and chats them up with ease), his inquisitive nature, and his love of learning. But, when I also look at Miles, I see a young boy who is so unlike me at his age and I marvel. He is so much more well-traveled than I was, his exposure to different cultures and languages is far superior to mine at his age, his adventurous/fearless nature, he beginning his education at a private institution, and most importantly, he is a much better ice skater and ice hockey player than I was at his age 8-). Miles and I are so alike, but oh so different and in many ways I so admire him.

Miles’ first day of KG went off without a hitch and he loved it! I look forward to many more first days of school for Miles and I wonder, if he will ever ask me to meet him at the bus stop? I doubt it!

I've returned to your blog because you selected "All the Shah's Men", an incredible book about the Middle East and the problems we have today. Kittie
